Living with IBD is complicated to say the least. As IBD Ninjas, you know that IBD is more than just a “bathroom disease.” More often than not, it isn’t just our digestive tracts that are rebelling against us. However, for me, my biggest problems begin in the bathroom. Even living with a j-pouch is not ideal compared to a happy, healthy colon.
I am always seeking ways of making my bathroom experience more bearable. Today, I want to tell you about bidets! Living with IBD for a little over five years now, I can tell you all about the horrors of what is called “butt burn.” The itchy, burning, stinging pain that comes from frequent bathroom visits.
There are several ways you can help soothe and even cut back on the butt burn. Many of you have heard me raving all about Calmoseptine. I swear that product has saved my bottom. There are also wet wipes that are soft and won’t give you as much irritation as regular toilet paper. I’ve even mentioned the “patting” method of cleaning yourself after a BM. There is, however, a better way to get clean and cut back on your monthly toilet paper bill.
Introducing the Luxe Bidet Neo 185. If you don’t know what a bidet is, it is basically a device that squirts water on your bottom to wash it off in lieu of wiping it with toilet paper. Bidets come in a variety of different forms. You have travel bidets that require no plumbing or installation. You also have bidets that resemble kitchen sink sprayers. Then you have the bidets that require no long hoses or access to a power outlet. This latter bidet describes the Neo 185.
Although there is some assembly required, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist—or even a plumber—to install it. The instructions were simple and easy to understand. The hardest part (for me) was making sure I got the connectors tight enough. There was a slight leak, but it was quickly remedied. A friend of mine even mentioned investing in “plumber’s tape.” This might be a great idea to help ensure there are no leaks.
While having a bidet is not really aesthetically pleasing, I would argue that in the instance of butt burn relief, comfort trumps beauty. It’s not really an ugly device, but it is a bit awkward and out-of-place. For some, this might be a turn off… but for me, it isn’t a deal breaker.
The Neo 185 has two knobs. One controls the pressure of the water, and the other one controls the cleaning method.
The pressure knob settings are off, and four levels of pressure from Low to High. From my personal experience, I actually don’t even turn the knob all the way to the lowest setting when cleansing my bottom. My bottom may just be sensitive from the war that has been waged on it by IBD so I have only turned it to just before the lowest setting and it works just fine. A nice gentle stream of cool water to soothe my tired bum. I have not tried the bidet in cold weather, so I may not like it so much in the winter time. The Neo 185 does not have a setting for temperature, but I believe there are others that do.
The cleaning method knob has three settings. One for rinsing itself, one for your bottom and a setting for the ladies. And let me tell you, the settings have great aim. I couldn’t care less about the setting for ladies, honestly. I was more interested in the one for cleaning your bottom. With a brief stream of water, you get cleaned up in no time! For me, living with a j-pouch (and IBD, obviously), I tend to get messier than I did when I was healthy. Because of this, I sort of rock back and forth to ensure a I am well cleaned.
After using the stream of water to clean yourself off, I would recommend taking some TP and patting yourself dry to ensure the least amount of irritation possible. I truly feel that using a bidet has greatly cut back on my TP bill. There are some out there who have special, reusable cloths that they dry themselves off with. I haven’t gotten that far yet, but I do think that would be helpful. You can either make the cloths or buy them online. It’s really up to you.
Honestly, I really love the Neo 185. As I said, it’s easy to use, easy to install and greatly cuts back on my TP bill and the butt burn. My husband told me that he could live without it… he does have a healthy colon, so… makes sense for him to say that. It was, however, quite entertaining listening to his response when using it for the first time…
“Holy crap! AH!!!!” He said through hysterical laughter.
At least give it a try (this link takes you to Amazon.com). I know you’ll like it.
